Tips: Ad placement for Forum Sites

Forums have become quite popular these days – anyone can easily create a forum and gather others with the same interests. Such gatherings are often so segmented that you can easily target ads to them according to their needs.

Forum Masters can easily find ads for their visitors by using contextual, geographic or category targeting. But why is the click rate still low? The problem could be the ad placement.

As forum visitors are more prone to visiting frequently and regularly, they will already know where to look and how to go about looking for it. The strategy should be to rearrange your ad placement to focus on these areas where your visitors eyes are most likely to follow.

Here is a hit map Google suggests for forum ad placement.

Ad placement is color coded: the darker the color, the more readily the viewer will see this ad.

As you might be able to tell, the banner post on the left hand side is more effective than one on the right hand side because most visitors know it’s an advertising area. Also, since the first and last post is what people usually look at, posting an ad above or below is also more effective than placing it in the middle of the content.

Every forum has its unique layout and content, and you know your audience the best. Apply these strategies and create your own way to success.
